Book Review

This summer we are trying to spend a lot of time reading. Kira needs LOTS of practice and Kamber is starting to figure out the reading thing as well. We go to the library about once a week and I am suprised at how hard it is to find GOOD early reading books. Alot of them are actually from the 80s- like when I was reading! And they are called things like, "The Tan Cap", "The Best Pals", and other random, simple words that my girls have no idea the meaning of. We have never used the word 'cap' or 'pals'- ever! So weird. For some reason I figured if you were just learning to read you would want common words that were easy to figure out from the picture. But anyway, I thought I would share some of our (mine and the girls) favorite books right now, that seem to be good for new readers, just in case any of you are looking for good ones, too.

The first is a set of I don't know how many by Olivier Dunrea. They are called "Gossie and Friends." They are simple stories about cute little goslings that are easy to read but at the same time introduce new vocabulary. And the story itself is fun to read. And the illustrations are adorable.

We highly recommend every one in the series.

Another series we love, that is also good for new readers is the "Elephant & Piggie" books by Mo Willems. They always make us laugh. The illustrations are very simple, but entertaining. The pigeon series by the same author is another of our favorites.

If any of you have any other suggestions, please, PLEASE let us know! We always need new suggestions.

Thanks for the book suggestions. I love the Hooked on Phonics series. They have cute books too. Of course the first set (Kindergarten) has the words pals and cap too, but the other books are great. You should be able to borrow them from the library. If not I can send you my 1st set which is kindergarten. Max is using the 1st grade set and Hannah is using the 2nd grade set right now. When we are done with those I can send you them too. Here's the blog for the 1st grade level.
